Meet the Team

HEAD COACH, SAM HOLLAND

Sam grew up in Shropshire and attended Ellesmere College where he joined Titans when the club started in 2009, having previously been a member of Whitchurch Wasps Swimming Club since the age of eight.

After his GCSEs Sam moved out to the BEST Centre in Mallorca where he was able to train in the outdoor 50m pool every day alongside studying for his A Levels.

Upon completion of his A Levels Sam was offered coaching work at the BEST Centre which was mainly with the Family Swim Holidays and the Masters Clinics.

It was during this time that Sam became fluent in Spanish and took an active role in the organisation of the annual Mallorca Olympic Triathlon followed soon afterwards by becoming one of the main organisers of the famous BEST FEST Open Water Swim Festival, a role he continues in to this day.

During his time at the BEST Centre Sam worked alongside coaches from all over the world including Olympic coaches on training camps with their national teams, including, amongst many others, GB’s David McNulty, Head Coach at Bath University who coached Olympic medallists, Michael Jamieson and Jo Jackson.

Upon moving back to the UK in November 2016, Sam set up his own very successful business, Wavelength, which predominantly focuses on stroke correction using underwater video analysis. He also provides frequent 50m pool training at Liverpool which is open to all for a small charge.

Sam was one of the Skills Coaches for the 2017 Shropshire County Development Pathway for 11 year olds and has been selected for the 2018 England Talent Coach Advisor/Mentor Support with Alan Bircher as part of the Swim England Development Programme.

Sam is an ASA Level 2 qualified Swimming Teacher, Level 2 Swimming Coach, Level 2 Open Water Swimming Coach and hopes to achieve Level 3 Swimming Coach in the not too distant future.

LUCY FAIRBANKS, SWIMMING TEACHER & ASSISTANT COACH

Lucy grew up in Shropshire and has been a competitive swimmer for ten years, nine of which have been with Shrewsbury ASC.  She has competed at Regional Championships every year since age 12 and has also taken part in Open Water Nationals twice.

Lucy is passionate about swimming and as well as wanting to better herself, she also wants to pass this passion on to the next generation of swimmers. As such, Lucy has been teaching the Development Squad since 2015. She is qualified to teach children with Special Educational Needs (SEN) and disabilities as well as able-bodied.

Lucy also teaches swimming with Total Swimming Ltd as well as with Speedo which takes her all over the country on their “Dive In” campaign.

Lucy is a volunteer coach with C Squad and an Assistant Coach with Wavelength. She is also able to deliver Aquatic Helper training to volunteers who wish to help the club in this way.

Lucy is an ASA qualified Level 2 Swimming Teacher and a Level 1 Coach. She is working towards Level 2 Swimming Coach and would like to also become an Open Water Coach in the future. She is also a qualified Pool Lifeguard (NPLQ).

TOM HOLLAND, SWIMMING TEACHER & ASSISTANT COACH

Tom grew up in Shropshire and is brother of our Head Coach, Sam.

Tom was a competitive swimmer between the ages of 9 and 18 and was a member of Whitchurch Wasps before joining Titans. He attended Ellesmere College before moving on to the University of Reading where he’s currently in his second year, studying a BSc in Agricultural Business Management.

Tom is also working towards the Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award having already achieved the Bronze and Silver Awards.

Tom is an experienced teacher and coach and holds the following qualifications:

ASA Level 2 Swimming Teacher
ASA Level 2 Swimming Coach
ASA Level 2 Open Water Coach.

WIL CARTER, SWIMMING TEACHER

Wil grew up in Shrewsbury and attended Meole Brace Secondary School then Shrewsbury Sixth Form College prior to taking a gap year to go travelling at the end of 2017. He is currently in Australia and is due to return home at the end of June 2018.

Wil has been a member of Shrewsbury ASC since the age of three, has swum competitively since he was nine years old and has twice been Boys’ Club Captain.

He has competed at Regional Championships and represented Shrewsbury ASC in Relays at the English National Championships. In 2014 Wil swam at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in London as part of the National Schools’ Biathlon where he came 13th in his age group. Wil has taught members of Development Squad from 2015 until late 2017 as well as assisting with other lessons where learners were up to 70 years of age.

As well as swimming, Wil has enjoyed football too, playing from ages 5 to15 for SAHA Mustangs. He is also a talented musician, having been Principal Euphonium for Shrewsbury Brass Band and a member of Shropshire School of Music, performing at Symphony Hall, Birmingham as part of Music for Youth.

In the Autumn of 2018, Wil will take up his place at the University of Birmingham to study Mathematics. He plans to continue swimming whilst at university and hopes to participate in the BUCS (British Universities and Colleges Sport) competitions.

He will remain a member of Shrewsbury ASC where he will be able to assist with teaching and coaching when required.

Wil is an ASA qualified Level 1 Swimming Teacher and will be attending the Level 2 course in August 2018. He is also a qualified Pool Lifeguard (NPLQ) and trained in the use of AED (Automated External Defibrillator).

FRANCESCA GELMETTI, SWIMMING TEACHER & ASSISTANT COACH

Franci grew up in Shrewsbury and attended Priory School before starting Walford College where she is currently studying Equine Management. Franci joined Shrewsbury ASC when she was 11 and swam competitively until 2017, when she decided to do the Level 1 Swimming Teacher (Assistant) qualification. She has been a Development Squad teacher for a year and a half and has fallen in love with teaching, leading to her enrol for the Level 2 Swimming Teacher course this summer. Franci is also a Level 1 Coach (Assistant). Photo to follow!!!
