NATIONAL ARENA LEAGUE
DIVISION 2 FINAL
SATURDAY 10TH DECEMBER 2011

WE GOT PROMOTED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That’s right guys, we have won promotion back to division 1!!
Going into the final, it was always a strong possibility that we could finish in the top 4 in the division and gain promotion. However, nothing in sport is guaranteed and the fact that we strongly deserved it would have no bearing on the results, and we also had several injuries and illnesses amongst the team. But this only made our success even greater.

The night started well with 11 out of a possible 12 points in the first 2 races courtesy of Sophie and Dan Evans. The following set of relays saw all of our swimmers produce strong swims, with victories coming from the boys 13/under medley team of William Carter, Tom Sykes, Ed Saxon and Harry Taylor and also the Open Medley Girls team of Amy Carter, Georgia Huddleston, Sophie Whittingham and Maddy Tracy. All of the individual races that followed saw our swimmers rise to the challenge of this final, including pb times for Tom R, Beth P, Lloyd D, James T, Lucy F, and Max D, while further victories came from Tom R, Tom S, Georgia H, Sophie W, Dan E and also the 13/u boys Free relay of Ed S, Tom S, Tom R and William C. As a team, we achieved 21 top 3 finishes. Final points on the night were:

Team Luton:                224pts
Abingdon:                    185pts
Leicester Penguins B:  178pts
SHREWSBURY:            160PTS
Biddulph:                     153pts
Boldmere B:                138pts

The team atmosphere amongst our swimmers was excellent with the whole team supporting our swimmer in the pool racing. Especially, when we briefly slipped to 5th place during the evening, the whole team raised their game further to ensure we got back in the top 4 to gain that all important promotion place. Big thanks to Jo and Fae for team managing and all of the travelling support. Bring on Division 1 next year!!

SHREWSBURY JUNIOR MEET
3RD DECEMBER 2011

The 3rd SASC Junior Winter meet saw 40 Shrewsbury swimmers take to the water in our home pool. The meet acts as a chance for our junior swimmers with little racing experience to take part in one of their first open meets, while those more accomplished can improve on their racing skills. All of the SASC swimmers rose the challenge of racing and this began from the very first race. The boys 200m back saw all of the boys in the event gain sizeable Pb swims. Furthermore, Joe Rowley, Ben Taylor, Zac Plant, Robbie Jowett, Tom Turner, Charlie Rimmer and Max Dalziel all gained new county times for 2012. This set the tone for the day where pb times were falling in every event and all of our swimmers were racing extremely well. Lily Oliver, Harry Bridgeman, Charlie Oliver, Orla McCormack and Juliet Mitchelmore, all making their open meet debuts, came away with new pbs, with Orla gaining the 200m Breast county QT. Additional county QT were earned by Aron Preece, Robbie Jowett, Zac Plant, Joe Rowley, Woody Goodall and Lucy Fairbanks.
The SASC team finished the day with:

GOLD MEDALS:          32
SILVER MEDALS:        33
BRONZE MEDALS:      30
NEW CQT:                   16
NEW PB TIME:             102

On top of this, Gemma Hughes and Lucy Fairbanks won the top girls awards in the 9yr and 12yr old age groups respectively. Massive well done to all of the Shrewsbury swimmers, who swam exceptionally well on the day.

HEREFORD OPEN MEET
NOVEMBER 2011

The first target meet of the 2011/12 season saw a large team of 38 SASC swimmers make the short journey to Hereford. Having had several successes at this meet in previous years, hopes were high for this year’s meet. The whole team certainly delivered!!

Event 1 saw 9yr old Ella Martindale record a massive pb and win bronze in the 200m Breast in her Open Meet debut. A further 6 pb swims, 2 medals and a Midland Qualifying Time (MDQT) in this event set the tone for the rest of the weekend. Special mention from the first session must also go to Tom Horswood who recorded huge pbs in both 400m Free and 200m IM, despite only returning from a 2 month injury lay off 3 weeks previously.

Session 2 brought around more of the same success from session 1. The girls 400m Free brought massive pbs for Gemma Hughes, Jodie Beddow and Lucy Fairbanks, while Georgia Huddleston gained another of her 7 MDQTs from the meet. More achievements in this sessions include first County Qualifying times in the 100m Breast for Grace McCartney and Kate Grindley and a gold medal in the 200m Freestyle for 9yr old Woody Goodall in his first Open Meet.

The Sunday sessions started with the boys 200m Breast presented Zac Plant with a silver medal in his first open meet, a much deserved pb and bronze for boys captain Ollie Russell and Gold and a pb for Tom Sykes in the 13yr age group. The boys 100m free later on saw 8 pb times, along with a first MDQT for Will Slawson. The morning session finished with the girls 200m Free in which SASC gained 5 more pb times and 2 gold medals. The final session began with the girls 200m Back. The was the club’s single most successful event of the weekend with 9 pb swims, 3 silvers and 2 gold medals, 4 new County times and a first MDQT of the season for Issy Lester. The remainder of the final session earned the swimmers more medals and pb times. At the end of the weekend, the stats for the club read:picture

            GOLD MEDALS:          24
            SILVER MEDALS:        30
            BRONZE MEDALS:      26
            NEW PB TIMES:         129
            NEW CQT:                   32
            MDQT:                         9

On top of these Lucy F and Georgia H both gained top girl awards in the 12yr and 13yr age groups respectively. Overall, Shrewsbury came second top visiting club. A very successful weekend for all involved. Congratulations to all the swimmers and a big thank you to the travelling parents for their support and Neil, Karen and Jo for their huge support on poolside. Bring on the rest of the season!!

NATIONAL ARENA SWIMMING LEAGUE 2011
WEST MIDLANDS DIVISION 2
ROUNDS 1 AND 2

ROUND 1: We travelled to Rugby for round 1 of this year’s competition. Hopes were high that we could equal or better the performance from last year of 2 gala victories and 7th place in league 2 overall. The team did not fail to deliver! Against some quality opposition we came out on top on the night, winning by a margin of 11 points from second placed Arnold. The team achieved 18 1st places, courtesy of Dan Evans, Sophie Whittingham, Maddy Tracy, Tom Sykes, Harry Taylor, Lloyd Davies, Georgia Huddleston, Tom Rowley, boys 13/u Free team and both Open Girls Relays. A further 15 top 3 finishes, along with 8 new pb times, assured we achieved maximum league points from round 1.

ROUND 2: This round saw us drawn at Leamington Spa with a tough list of opposing teams, including league leaders Team Luton. As in round 1, the whole team swam excellently with victories in events 1 and 2, right through to the last relays at the end. 12 first, along with a further 19 top 3 finishes and 9 pb times all help build a strong 205 points total, placing second overall on the night, giving us a strong chance of making the division 2 final this year. Victories on the night came from Dan Evans, Maddy Tracy, Georgia Huddleston, Lloyd Davies, Tom Rowley, girls Open medley and boys 13/u freestyle relays.
Both rounds were excellent team performances, with an awesome atmosphere amongst the whole team. Bring on round 3!!!!

MIDLAND YOUTH CHAMPS 30TH APR-1ST MAY AND MIDLAND

BAGCAT CHAMPS 4TH-12TH JUNE

SASC were represented at this year’s regional championships by 8 swimmers.

The Youth champs saw James Wilson, Issy Lester and Sophie Whittingham compete in 12 events between them. James performed well in the 50m Butterfly to record both a long course and converted short course pb time, while also swimming close to his pb in the 50m Backstroke. Issy managed to improve her ranking positions significantly in all 4 of her events, the best coming in the 200m Back, where she finished a creditable 28th in the 14/15yr age group. Sophie proved that she is still a force to be reckoned with at regional championships. 9 years after making her debut at this level, she again managed to reach finals, this time in the 200m IM and 400m Freestyle, whilst also performing well in her other 4 events.

At the BAGCAT champs, Harry Taylor, Tom Rowley, Lucy Fairbanks, Ellie Sykes and Georgia Huddleston gained an impressive 17 QT’s between them. Leading the way was Georgia with 10 events. She achieved new long course pb times in the majority of her events. The highlight of these being the 200m Breast. In the heat, she raced hard and achieved new pbs at the 50m, 100m and 200m breast all in the same race! She made the final for this event, placing 7th and setting another 200m pb.

Harry competed both weekends, in the 200m Back and gruelling 400m IM events. The 200m back was a new long course pb, whilst he also set a pb in the 400m Medley event. Ellie, Lucy and Tom were all 1st time regional qualifiers. Lucy swam her way to a new long course 200m Free pb, despite being ill on the day. For Ellie and Tom it was the first time competing in a 50m pool and swam well, especially due to the high standard of the competition. Ellie was rewarded with a new short and long course 100m breast pb and also swam in the 200m Breast, while Tom competed in the 100m and 200m Back events.

Well done to all for their hard work in qualifying and their performances at the championships.

'ALMOND MAKES EUROPEAN TEAM FOR BERLIN'

GEMMA2

Shrewsbury's very own female club captain Gemma Almond has achieved a massive success at the 2011 European IPC Disability Swimming European Championships in Berlin in July.

Having qualified for the 400m Freestyle event, she was also entered for the 100m Freestyle, 200m IM and the 100m fly. Gemma has continued to train exceptionally hard throughout the year and through her A’ level exams. In Berlin she placed 5th in the 100m Fly with a new personal best time. She also set a new pb in the 100m Free heat to reach the finals where she swam another pb and placed 4th.

She then set a new 400 m Free pb in the final where she again placed 4th, a mere 0.8 seconds from bronze position. She did, however, go one better in her favoured 200m IM event. In the heat she swam just outside her pb placing her 3rd fastest for the final. In the final she swam even faster, achieving a new pb for the event and winning a well deserved bronze medal.
A huge congratulations to Gemma from the whole club.

A massive achievement we can all be proud of!

SHREWSBURY ASC 5TH SPRING OPEN MEET

SATURDAY 2ND APRIL 2011

This year's edition of the SASC April meet saw it return to its original format of 3 sessions. Despite it being a very long day, it proved to be highly successful both in and out of the pool for our club. On the day, the Shrewsbury swimmers rose to the challenge of being the host club and lead by exmaple from the first event onwards. A massive 52 PB's later, we won 27 Gold, 16 Silver and 19 Bronze medals, along with 12 Midland Qualifying Times courtesey of Sophie WHittingham, Issy Lester and Georgia Huddleston. A higher entry level from our own swimmers in this Level 2 meet shows how the standard of our club is improving all the time, a very positive sign.

Well done to all at the meet on the day, both swimmers and organisers/officials.
