Energize Awards 2013 – Winners

The Shropshire and Telford and Wrekin Energize Awards evening was held on Thursday 7th November 2013 at Shrewsbury Town Football club. Following Judith Lester’s excellent work in nominating Shrewsbury Swimming Club, Danny Malcolm and Amy Carter for Community Club of the Year, Coach of the Year and Young Volunteer of the year respectivley, we came away with two winners: Community Club and Young Volunteer

Shrewsbury Swimming Club’s nomination read:

Shrewsbury Amateur Swimming Club has Swim 21 status and delivers swimming coaching to young people and adults.  Over the last 5 years under the guidance of a new Head Coach and committee a clear, long-term development plan has been produced and the Club has gone from strength to strength.

The club caters for competitive of swimmers and those that just want to swim for fitness. There are special sessions for young people encouraging them to stay in the sport through the difficult teenage years.  They are also offered the chance to gain recognised qualifications and volunteer with the club, gaining skills for employment.

In 2012 one of their swimmers, Gemma Almond, represented Great Britain at the Paralympics. As she came up through the ranks, SASC and the Head Coach were noticed by Swim Wales and the GB disability Coaches. Consequently SASC is a signpost club for disability swimmers from Mid Wales.

And Amy’s nomination was:

18 year old Amy has been volunteering for Shrewsbury Amateur Swimming Club for four years and in that time she has given over 500 hours of her time. She helps to coach the younger squad members and gives up weekends to team manage at junior galas.

For the last 2 years Amy has been the Club Captain.  She has helped to organise fun nights for the swimmers, a 24 hour swim for charity and she is also the link between the swimmers, the committee and the Coach.

Amy has taken various courses to improve her ability to help other swimmers – both novices and those wanting to compete.  Alongside her volunteering Amy has completed GCSEs and A levels, and works part time as a lifeguard.

Well done to both winners and commiserations to Danny who was up against some tough competition. Photos of the winners appeared in the shropshire Star and can be seen at:  http://www.shropshirestar.com/news/2013/11/08/shropshires-sporting-stars-honoured-at-energize-awards/.

A full list of all the nominees can be seen on Energize’s website at http://www.energizeawards.co.uk/

Many thanks to Judith as, without her nominations, we would not have had any winners!

Swimmers Aid Surviving Cancer

At 9:30 am on Saturday 13th July 2013 swimmers from SASC will be starting a 24 hour swim at the Quarry Swimming Centre in Shrewsbury.

The event is being held, primarily to raise funds for Cancer Research UK.

Please click here to read the letter that has been given out to all swimmers detailing the swim and how you can be involved in raising funds and making sure the event runs smoothly.

Many thanks to Shrewsbury Community Leisure Trust for donating the pool time free of charge.

Please get involved with this worthy cause – chaperoning, making cakes, counting laps etc.  The more help offered, the better the event will be!
