HEREFORD OPEN MEET – NOVEMBER 2014

For many of the clubs swimmers, the first target meet of the season was once again the Hereford Open Meet, which had proved to be a successful place for the SASC swimmers to race in the past. 2014’s meet proved to be no different!!
With the largest team there of 33 entrants, the swimmers set about smashing best times right from event 1 and continued in the same fashion for all 4 sessions over the 2 days. In all, they recorded in excess of 150 best times and they all reaped the rewards of their early season hard work. New county QT’s and new Midland short and long course champ times were notched up also, along with the following:

39 Gold, 37 Silver and 23 Bronze medals
Top girls awards for Lucy Fairbanks and Gemma Hughes
Top club award for 3rd year running!!

It really was an all-round superb performance from the whole team and a great springboard looking forward to the rest of the season!! Well done to all involved!!

BRITISH GAS NATIONAL MASTERS AND SENIOR AGE GROUPS CHAMPIONSHIPS, SHEFFIELD, OCTOBER 2014

The annual Short-course National Masters competition was once again held at Ponds Forge in Sheffield. The races are held across two pools of fast racing, the men’s in 1 pool while the women’s events are held in an adjacent pool at the same time. The event attracts the very best in masters’ swimmers from across the UK, with several British, European and World record holders and champions racing.
Tom Horswood was making his first appearance at this event, racing across 2 days in 5 events. Day 1 saw him race 1sec outside his 1500m Freestyle pb while picking up an impressive Silver medal in the 18-24yr age group. Later in the day he saw a respectable 50m Back and then a 2.5sec pb in the 200m Breast to finish the day. Day 2 started in the morning with the 400m Freestyle. Another good swim saw a new best time of over 4 secs, placing 5th, less than a second from Bronze. His best swim came in his last event, the 200m Back. Racing in the fastest heat in the outside lane, he paced the race to perfection with a strong 2nd half, gained a 2sec pb and a gold Medal to be Masters Champion 2014!! Well done Tom.

NATIONAL COUNTY TEAM CHAMPIONSHIPS, SHEFFIELD, OCTOBER 2014

6 of our swimmers were selected to represent Shropshire in the annual National County Team Champs competition in Sheffield. 32 Counties of England, plus 2 areas of Wales and 4 area teams from Scotland make up the competition, held in 2 divisions raced simultaneously in two 25m pools of fast and furious action!!! Shropshire finished the day in a respectable 11th place in division 2. Wil Carter, Izzy Lester and Max Dalziel all raced their respective age group 100m Freestyle, while Ellie and Tom Sykes were competing in their age group’s 100m Breast plus all 5 of them and Lucy Armitage were part of a Medley relay each too. All of the individual races were solid swims with Wil and Max’s being new Short course best times, while all 6 relay splits that were swum saw the swimmers rise to the team occasion, with most of them being fastest ever splits!! Well done to all and congratulations on your selection.

NATIONAL ARENA LEAGUE: WEST MIDS PREMIER DIVISION – ROUND 1: NUNEATON: OCTOBER 2014

Premier Division by name and definitely Premier Division by nature(and standard of competition!!!) After our deserved promotion last season, were are now in the top flight of this comp in the region, taking on and racing the big clubs!! This meant we knew the competition was going to be a whole new level, so we had to present an ever bigger team unit with huge team spirit to mount any kind of challenge! The atmosphere among the team was awesome the whole way through despite us feeling the force of the city teams!!
On the night we placed 6th but the performance the team gave was far better than this position would suggest. They gained new pbs in more than half the individual events, 18 in total and the team support in the last set of relays was the best I have ever known amongst the swimmers. Our only 1st place was from Ellie in the 15/u 100m Breast, 2nd places came from Lucy A in the 13/u 100m Fly and Free plus Ellie in the 15/u 100m Free and the girls cannon of Claire, Izzy, Kate Lucy A, Ellie and a great last leg from Lucy F. 3rd places came from Lucy F in the Open 200m IM, Amelia in the 11/u 50m Breast and the girls 15/u Medley team of Megan, Ellie, Grace and Beth. Onto round 2 in November to continue our top flight fight!!
Leicester Sharks ‘A’:                   209

ROBIN HOOD LEVEL 1 OPEN MEET, SHEFFIELD, OCTOBER 2014

17 SASC swimmers made the familiar journey to Ponds Forge in Sheffield for the annual Robin Hood Long Course Open Meet. This meet is used by ourselves as an early season racing meet and beneficial long course experience, with the sole focus about getting in and racing tough against quality opposition. And race tough they did!!!
More than 60 Long Course pbs set, more than half of which also converted to new short course best times too. Additionally, Will S, Lucy F, Lucy A, Izzy, Ellie S and Woody gained 21 medals amongst them. The most pleasing over the whole weekend was the attitude towards the meet and the business-like approach to each race and the numerous long swim downs that were ordered to all. No issues, just great swimming.  To top it all off was the visit the swimmers had from one Miss Adlington!!! Well done folks.

WEST MIDLAND REGIONAL DISABILITY CHAMPIONSHIPS, RUGBY, SEPTEMBER 2014

3 of Shrewsbury’s disability swimmers made the trip to Rugby for the early season Regional Disability Champs. This was a chance to race against the best up and coming disability swimmers from both the West and East Mids. Competing across 5 events each, Tom Piggott, Reilly Shanahan and Porsha Jones were kept extremely busy during the short gala, due to the fast turn-around of events!! This made their achievements even more impressive. Whilst being on pb times(many of which were set at the very end of last season) or setting new best times across the majority of their races, they came away with a 9 medal haul!! Reilly won Silver in the 200m IM and Gold in the 200m Free, Porsha won Bronze in the 100m IM, 100m Back and 50m Breast, while Tom gained Bronze in the opening 400m Free, Silver in the 100m IM and 100m Breast and topped those off with Gold in the 200m IM. All of this is promising for the rest of the season for all 3, next stop in the National DSE Champs in Sheffield in November. Well done guys, great job!!!!
