A small team of 6 swimmers travelled to Bristol for the club’s first Open meet in the new National Qualifying window, while the meet was also a Youth Midland Champs warm up.
The youth swimmers there were Max, Tom H, Ed, Izzy and Ellie who set numerous season’s best time amongst them boding well for the Youth Midland Champs at the start of May. Ellie also won Bronze in the 15y/over 100 Breast. Also competing was Lucy Armitage who set several PB’s across her 7 events, whilst also winning 4 Gold and 3 Silver medals in the 12yrs age group. Well done guys!!!
Porsha Jones, Reilly Shanahan and Tom Piggott were the 3 SASC representatives at the largest domestic Disability Meet of this season in Glasgow back in March. This meet attracted large teams from several nations across the globe and also doubled up as the trials for the GB team for the IPC World Champs later in the season. This all meant that the start lists for all events included a large number of international medallists and Paralympian’s.
Not to be fazed by the occasion, our 3 swimmers stood up and were counted ready to gain the results of their hard work.
Day 1 started with all 3 of them setting sizeable new best times in the 100m Free, followed up by Tom swimming to a new PB in the 100m Breast. Day 2 saw all 3 of them race the 50m Free and 200m IM with all but one of these swims again being strong swims and new PBs. Days 3 was the 100m Back for all 3 plus the 100 Fly for Porsha and Tom. This was the first 100 Fly long course for Porsha while all the other swims were once again new PBs and this continued on day 4 in the 400m Free for Tom and Reilly.
To post such a high PB rate in a high pressured and highly competitive environment shows just how well the 3 swimmers did and represented the club extremely well. Massive congrats to all 3!!!!!
For many of the clubs swimmers, the 2nd target competition of the season was the annual Shropshire County Age Group Champs held over 2 weekends in Wolverhampton. With over 40 swimmers qualified, Shrewsbury has excellent representation across the board and the swimmer’s rose to the challenge that the rest of the county had to offer.
Over the 4 days of racing, the swimmers achieved a PB rate of 69%, whilst also notching up 109 final appearances between them. With a medal count of 35 Gold, 16 Silver and 21 Bronze and also 67 Midland Qualifying times, it was a successful meet all round.
Multiple County Champions were Lucy Armitage, Porsha Jones, Reilly Shanahan, Ffion Butler, Tom Piggott and Ellie Sykes and Melissa Pugh also won Gold too. Furthermore, Aron Preece and Henry Sewell finished 2nd in the 16yrs and 10yrs age groups respectively, while Lucy Armitage set a new 100m IM County Record and won 14 out of 17 Golds in her age group along with top 13yr Girl award. An awesome performance by the whole team, big congratulations!!!!
A team of around 20 Shrewsbury swimmers took to the long course pool in Coventry for some post-Christmas racing over 2 days. For most it was their first long course meet of the season, for others it was their first exposure to a 50m pool.
Despite not long back to training following the short Christmas break, the whole team raced well across the weekend. All the swimmers recorded new best times in some of their events with many of these converting to short course best time also.
They also picked up a massive medal haul of 28 Gold, 16 Silver and 26 Bronze medals. To further top this Woody, Michael and Kate all won the top swimmers awards in their respective age groups and Robbie Cowley gained his first ever Midland Qualifying time in the 50m Fly. Great racing guys!!!!

The weekend before Christmas saw 11 swimmers race at the Level 1 Long Course Derventio Excel meet in Sheffield. This was the 1st target meet for a few swimmers plus an additional long course meet for experience for some others.
Over the 3 day Meet they achieved over 45 new long course best times, with many of these also converting to new short course bests also. The previous few months of hard training were paying off with some excellent races across the board. Highlights from the meet included Lucy Armitage winning 5 Gold Medals, plus 1 Silver and 1 Bronze and best times in all but 1 of her events in the 12yrs age group. Other medals came from Sophia and Gemma with 2 medals apiece and also Will Slawson placed 3rd overall in the 15/over category based on FINA points.
For most of these swimmers it is now full steam towards Midland Champs in May/June!!!
Ffion, Tom Piggott and Reilly were the club’s representatives in the MC Disability events at the Swim Wales Winter Champs down in Swansea just before Christmas.
Having just set new best times a matter of weeks before at the DSE champs, backing it up was the aim for all 3 of them over the 3 day meet. Reilly set new best time once again in most of his events, highlighting the continual progression he has been making over the recent months through his hard work. Tom was close to his recently set best times in his main events, whilst setting new best times in events not usually available to his classification and Ffion was also not far off her recently set PB’s from Manchester too.
All 3 of them made finals in the evening sessions and managed to improve their times from heats to finals. Well done guys!!!
The National Disability Short Course Championships moved to Manchester for this season and saw the country’s best Paralympic and disability athletes fight it out in the pool. Representing SASC were Ffion, Tom Piggott, Reilly and Porsha.
Over the 2 day meet, the 4 of them swam almost 20 races, with all but 2 of these being new best times, with some of these being sizeable PBs, including a 20sec best for Reilly in the 400 Free!! Several of these swims were also within the QTs for the British Para-Swimming International Meet in Glasgow in March. Furthermore, Ffion picked up Bronze medals in the 100 Free and 100 Back, plus a Silver in the 100 Fly. Well done to all 4 of them.
