NATIONAL ARENA SWIMMING LEAGUE – ROUND 2 : RUGBY: SAT 14TH NOVEMBER

Round 2 of this year’s Arena League saw us travel to Rugby. Round 2 can always be a very open competition and apart from the runaway winners on the night, Sutton-in-Ashfield, it was fairly close between the other 5 teams during the gala. At the end of the racing we placed 4th, merely 5 points behind the City of Derby ‘B’ team. Results for the team were similar to round 1 with the younger ages finding it a bit tougher due to some inexperience and swimmers racing up in age, while more of our points came in the older ages, particularly in the relays. Again we won both cannons at the end of the gala and our team atmosphere and racing skills were superb all night. Victories on the night came courtesy captain Rob Cowley in the open Mens 100 Breast, 100 Free and 200IM, Wil Carter in the open 100Back, Tom Rowley and Michael Doyle in the 15/under 100Back and 100 Breast respectively and both 6×50 free cannon teams. Onto round 3 on Saturday 12th December.

CAPTAIN ROB QUALIFIES FOR NATIONAL SHORT COURSE CHAMPS!!

The Regional short-course Championships for 2015 were held over the first weekend in November at the newly-opened Harvey Hadden Swimming Centre in Nottingham and the club were represented by Ed Saxon and Rob Cowley competing over the 2 days. Despite having already suffered with injury this season, Ed qualified and swam 6 events equalling his best times in 4 and setting new SC bests in the 100m IM and 50m Fly. Rob raced in 4 events equalling PBs in 3 and then in the 100m IM he went under the minute barrier, qualified 3rd for the final and gained a National Short Course QT meaning he will be lining up against the country’s best in Sheffield in December!!! Good early season racing boys!

NATIONAL ARENA SWIMMING LEAGUE – ROUND 1: MARKET DRAYTON: OCTOBER 2015

Round 1 of the 2015 National Arena League saw us host at Market Drayton. The gala ran extremely smoothly and from a performance perspective was a great night. With no fewer than 6 SASC Club team debuts, the team swam and supported brilliantly as a group collective and earned an impressive 2nd place finish on the night. The older and more experienced swimmers lead by example both in and out of the water and the newer team members got stuck in and raced well. We had 13 victories on the night, 3 of which were the last 3 relays of the night, which had us all leaving feeling like we had won overall! Race victories came courtesy of the following: Rob Cowley in the open men’s IM, breast and Free, Wil C in the open men’s Fly and both open men’s relays. Lucy F in the open ladies back, Ellie S in the open ladies Breast and the open ladies free cannon. Also, the 15/u boys medley team along with Michael D in the 15/u breast and fly and Tom R in the 15/u Back. We lie in 8th place in the division currently.

An awesome team performance, well done guys!!

ASA NATIONAL TEAM CHAMPIONSHIPS – PONDS FORGE, SHEFFIELD, OCTOBER 2015

Shrewsbury had 3 representatives in the Shropshire Team for the National Team Championships, held on Sunday 18th October at Ponds Forge in Sheffield. The Shropshire team collectively earned a respectable 10th place finish in Division 2. Woody Goodall swam to an excellent pb in the 12/13yrs 100m Back and also in the 50m back in the lead off leg of the relay. Despite early season illness once again, Ellie Sykes swam a decent individual 100m breast and a strong 50m breast relay split in the 16/17yrs medley team. Finally Ed Saxon equalled his 100 Fly PB even though suffering with injury and then raced tough in the fly leg in the medley team and set a 50 Free pb on lead off leg of the mixed cannon.

Well done guys!!

WEST MIDS REGIONAL DISABILITY CHAMPS – RUGBY, OCTOBER 2015

Reilly Shanahan and Porsha Jones were SASC representatives at the West Mids regional Disability Champs at Rugby in October. With a fast turn-around of events, this was a tough mental and physical challenge for both of them, competing in 5 events each in less than 2 hours!! Reilly, competing in the 50,100,400 free, 100 back and 100 IM, set 4 new pbs and won a bronze medal in the 400m Free. Porsha raced in the 50 and 100 Free, 50 breast, 100 Back and 200 IM setting pbs in 4 and winning medals in all races!! She came away with a Bronze, 3 silvers and 1 Gold!!!
