The 3rd weekend of the year saw more than 20 SASC swimmers travel to Coventry to take part in their Long course meet. For many of them this was their first 50m racing of the season, with some being their first sight of a 50m pool ever!! The meet was about early year post Christmas racing. For some, to see where they were racing-wise, for some to gain more experience in long course racing, but for all to post their best times possible.
Over the course of the 2 day meet, the swimmers put in some strong performances, with many recording new best times, both long and converted to short. Special mention goes to Owen, Erin Knight, Marie and Archie who were all making their long course racing debuts. The team won a combined total of 48 medals, 21 of which were Gold, along with Woody and Gemma winning top swimmers awards in the 13yr category. Furthermore, new regional times were achieved by Woody, Wil C, Eloise and Michael. Good work folks!!
Boys club captain Rob Cowley was our sole representative at the new look ASA National Short-Course champs held at Ponds Forge. This meet was the pinnacle of the new short course season and entrants included numerous International medallists and Olympians. Having excelled at the regional short course champs the month earlier, he had qualified for the 100m IM which took place on day 3 of the 4 day National Champs. Racing from the outside lane 9, he showed excellent race skills and produced a new best time of 59.04, improving his ranking by nearly 10 places and missing the ‘B’ final by 0.5secs. A fine performance for a first individual national event. Good job Rob!
Round 3 of the Arena League competition saw us back in Rugby racing at the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Centre. Knowing that we would safely remain in Division 2 for next year, this round was solely concerned with nailing a great team performance to finish off the year. And despite excess traffic on the way to the pool making us slightly late and stressing out the head coach, an awesome performance was once again delivered by the whole team.
We started the evening with a 2nd and a 1st place in the opening 200m IM races and finished the evening with a 2nd and 1st place in the 6×50 cannons. Overall, there were 13 victories for the team backed up by a further 15 top 3 places. Support poolside amongst the team was strong as ever, especially through both sets of relays. 1st places came from the girls 15/u medley and free team of Emma, Grace, Melissa and Gemma, while Gemma and Melissa joined Beth, Claire, Ellis and Lucy F to win the 6×50 Cannon. Ellie and Lucy also won the open breast and back respectively and Gemma the 13/u Free. Not to be outdone boys victories came from the open medley team of Wil, Rob, Hayden and Ed, with Ed also winning the open fly and Captain Cowley winning the open Breast, Free and Medley. Finally Tom R and Michael were victorious in the 15/u Back and Breast respectively. The whole team deserve the joint 2nd place we gained on the night for showing great determination, spirit and race skills. Great job guys!
Reilly, Tom Piggott, Porsha and Ffion once again represented SASC at the annual Disability National Swimming Champs. As these champs are now held long-course, it was their first chance to compete against fellow para-athletes from across the country in a similar environment to that they will be in when it comes to trials in April. Reilly raced in 5 events, setting new best times in 4 of them, the best of which came in the 400m Free, where he achieved a huge new pb and went over 400 points. Tom competed in all 6 events, posting times around his best in 4 of them and new pb times in the 100Free and 100 Breast. Unfortunately Ffion was ill during the week of the champs so despite some positive and strong racing, she was off her best times. Porsha had some strong performances across the 2 days and was on her best times across the board. Furthermore, she achieved Gold in the 100m Breast and Silver in the 400m Free in the 13/u age group. A positive start to the para-swimming season by all 4. Good work guys!!
