Nuneaton Junior League Round 2: Cheslyn Hay; Saturday 12th May 2012

Diddy league round 2 saw us back at the same venue as the first round, Cheslyn Hay, to improve on the 3rd place we earned back in April. And improve the junior team did!! Having learnt from the unfortunate DQ’s that cost us previously, the young swimmers were much more solid in their swims and their overall team performance and it showed in the results! 27 1st places, yes 27!!!, backed up by a further 15 top 3 finishes meant we won on the night with a massive 239 points! This means we have moved up the league table to 5th with a real chance of making the final in September.

The girls 9yrs excelled once again, winning both their relays again, this time with the addition of Darcy Rimmer, whilst Gemma H won the back and fly and Sophia M-E won the Free. A further 9yrs victory came courtesy of Josh Porter in the boys back! Ben T won the 10yrs breast while Woody Goodall took 1st place in the back and the team won both their relays. 11yr old victories came from the girls, with Hattie winning the back and Grace winning both the fly and free and they both teamed up with Josie Adams and Anya Lonergan to win the Medley relay. Not to be outdone, Zac Plant swimming up an age won the 11yrs 50 Fly for the boys. The most successful age group of the night was the 12yrs, with both the boys and girls winning 5 out of their 6 races. The girls took maximum points in both relays along with Orla in the free and breast and Beth Powney in the fly, while the boys again won both relays, plus Tom R in the back and fly and Robbie Jowett in the breast. Finishing off our tally of victories was the girls 8x25m cannon and the gala ending mixed 8×25 cannon.

All swimmers made valuable contributions throughout the evening and the atmosphere again was awesome, as was the support from the travelling parents! Here comes round 3!

Wrexham Spring Open Meet: Wrexham Waterworld Centre; 5th-6th May 2012

For the 3rd year running, a group of Shrewsbury swimmers made the short trip to North Wales for Wrexham SC’s popular Spring Meet. As ever, the overall high entry level was going to provide some fast racing and good competition and although we had a slightly smaller team present from last year, they all raced hard and fast coming away from the weekend with an impressive haul. Amongst the 14 SASC swimmers, they achieved 50 new pbs, plus 22 medals, 9 of which were Gold.

Leading by example all weekend was Senior Girls Captain Amy Carter. Whilst setting new pb times in the majority of her swims, she won Silver in the 200m IM and 5 Golds, coming in the 50m Back and Fly, 200m Back and 200m and 400m Free. The latter 3 of her gold medal swims being sizeable pbs! Continuing to make large inroads into her personal best was Kate Grindley. She took a clean sweep of the 50/100/200 Breast races and a silver in the 400m Free. The 3rd Gold medallist of the meet for the team was Lolly Latham, who took the 13yrs 200m Fly win, along with Bronze in the 100m Fly.

The medallist for the boys was William Carter, who won Silver in the 50m Back and bronze in the 400m Free, 200m Back and Fly, along with a clutch of new best times from the weekend. Other swimmers to earn medals over the 2 days were Sasha Gardiner(50m Back), Sarah Clews(200m Breast + 400m Free), Abi Leech(50m Fly) and Grace McCartney(50m Breast). The remaining swimmers who added to our massive pb total for the weekend were Georgina Wilson, Aron Preece, Connor Gardiner, Faye and Eve Morgan and Anna Horlock. Big congratulations to all of you for your successes!!!!

Midland Youth Championships, 5th – 6th May 2012 at Coventry Sports Centre

Clare

Clare

Issy Lester and Claire Beddow were Shrewsbury’s representatives at this year’s Midland Youth Champs. While the entry level was slightly lower than usual, the standard of the competition was as strong as ever. Both girls were competing in the 15/16yrs double age band.

Issy

Issy

The first day saw Issy first up in the 100m Fly early in the morning session. She swam a great race, producing a new long course(50m pool) pb, while converting to equal her short course (25m pool) pb also. Next up for both girls was the 200m Freestyle, with both of them in heat 3. Claire raced tough and swam to equal her recent long course pb time in her first ever midlands race, while Issy set a new long course pb time. After a much needed rest gap, they both were up in the 50m Freestyle. Issy equalled her pb, as did Claire whilst winning the following heat from lane 8. Last up on day 1 was Issy in the 200m back. She swam a well paced and controlled race from lane 6 to set a new pb and win her heat.

Day 2 saw Issy compete in the 400m Freestyle, 200m IM and 100m Freestyle. In the unfavoured lane 8 in the 400m Free, she set a new pb by 6 seconds. With not much rest, she was back in for the 200m IM, and thanks to a strong 2nd half to her race, she equalled her pb. Last of her 7 races was in the 100m Free, where she set another new pb and rounded off her championships in the same fashion she started them!! Over the course of the 2 days, the girls represented the club extremely well, but also managed to improve considerably on their ranking positions going into the championships across all their races, which is what racing at this level is all about. Congratulations to both girls.

Nuneaton Junior League (Diddy League) Round 1 – Saturday 21st April 2012 – Cheslyn Hay

The 3rd weekend in April saw the start of the annual Nuneaton Junior League competition for 9-12yr old. This ‘diddy’ league is a great opportunity for our junior swimmers to shine and race well in a team environment.

And race well they did!! In every race of the night, Shrewsbury swimmers were in the hunt for victories and those all important 6 points. Our first victory didn’t take long to arrive, event 7 courtesy of girls captain Megan Potts in the 12yrs 50m Back, with boys captain Tom Rowley following suit in the next race. Further individual wins came from Harry Bridgeman, Tom R and diddy league debutantes Gemma Hughes, Zac Plant and Orla McCormack, while we notched up 6 relay wins, including the all important gala ending cannon!! Special mention has to go to the 9yr old girls team. Not only did Gemma H win both her individuals and Sophia Motola-Evans win her freestlye, but they teamed up with Laura Walford and Amy Watton to win both of their relays. Well done girls!

The team finished the evening 16 victories, plus a further 19 top 3 finishes, meaning we were 3rd overall. However, this doesn’t reflect the strong team performances across the board and the excellent atmosphere, both amongst the team and from the travelling support! The result puts us mid-table going into round 2, still we a realistic chance of making the final in September and gaining promotion back to league 2. Bring on round 2, again in Cheslyn Hay!

City of Leicester Age Group Open Meet 13th-15th April 2012, Brainstone Leisure Centre

Midland Swimmers

SASC’s Team

A new competition for us for 2012 saw 9 SASC swimmers travel to the modern and cool (in every sense of the word!!) pool at Braunstone Leisure Centre. This meet acted as a last chance saloon for swimmers to gain MDQTs for the 2012 Champs in May and June. The meet started for us in awesome fashion, with Will S and Lucy smashing the pbs by 7 seconds each to easily gain their midland times. Saturday continued in the same fashion with several pbs. Ellie hit new times in the 200m IM and 100 Free, while Lucy got a new pb in the 200m back and 200m IM, with the IM being a MDQT. Tom S got a new best time in the 200m Free, while his new 200m Breast time earned him Gold, as did his new time in the 100m Breast final. Tom H and Will both got new best times in the 100m Back, with Will placing 4th in the final, as did Issy in the 100m Fly in a new MDQT and pb. Claire swam to a new pb in the 200 back and also 6th place in the 100m Free final.

Sunday produced much of the same. Jodie swam an excellent 200m free to gain a new best time, the same result came for Tom R in the 200m IM and 100m Free. All swimmers raced to new best times, while more MDQTs came from Issy(50m Free), Claire(200m Free) and Will(100m Fly). Final highlights came from Will placing 5th in the 100m Free and 6th in the 100m Fly and Ellie earning a Silver medal in the 100m Breast. Our 4th and final medal came from Will in the 200m IM. All 9 swimmers raced exceptionally well and represented the club in excellent fashion. I sense this pool and meet will prove to be a happy hunting ground for the club and our swimmers in the future!!
